The Unijos Law Clinic & PPDC prison audit
On June 11, 2024, the University of Jos Law Clinic embarked on a facility audit at the Maximum Correctional Center in Jos, in line with its preparation for a collaborative project with the PPDC’s Reforming Pretrial Detention Project in Nigeria (RPDPN II).
During the audit, the clinic thoroughly assessed the number of inmates housed at over 1,180 inmates, as well as the number of inmates awaiting trial, including both men and women, at over 700, all of whom stand to benefit from potential release, opportunities for rehabilitation, and of course— access to justice.
In addition to the audit, the clinic engaged in substantial interactions with the cell leaders to effectively communicate between inmates, in a bid to support the mission of the PPDC through collaborative efforts.
The clinic also had significant discussions with the chief officer of the correctional center, Mr. Ponyak Nandag, his team of wardens, and the legal officer at the center, Mr Pekes, These conversations focused on the collective efforts required to restore justice and improve conditions within the facility.
The outcome of the audit and the initial assessment was overall successful.
The University of Jos Law Clinic is enthusiastic about the prospects of prison reform in Jos, Plateau State, and throughout Nigeria. The clinic looks forward to making a substantial impact through the joint partnership with the PPDC, aiming to enhance justice and reformation opportunities for inmates.
